prepare to change - december 22 2018

There is such a thing as biased listening.  Biased listening happens when we get ahead of the story and make conclusions before we even hear the whole story.  Well sometimes we get it and many times we don’t but supposedly it helps us get ahead and somehow predict what comes ahead.
Today our readings however seem to put our biased listening into disarray – we cannot conclude as we want to or as we should.  In our real world the mighty are mighty, while the weak are weak. But in the Song of Hannah the bows of the mighty are broken, while the tottering gird on strength.

In our real world the rich eat well, the poor cannot eat.  But in the Song of Hannah the well-fed hire themselves out for bread, while the hungry batten on spoil.  In the song of Hannah everything is confused.
Again this is affirmed by the Song of Mary in our gospel – the mighty are cast down, the lowly are lifted; the hungry are filled, and the rich are sent away empty.
Where does this lead us?
When Jesus comes, 1 plus one is not always 2.  When Jesus comes prepare for the new.  Prepare yourself for surprises.  When Jesus comes some things should not be the same, some things should not be as usual, some things should not be SOP.  Prepare to change outlook, prepare to change ways of thinking, prepare to change ways. This is what makes Christmas not just another day, but a real coming of the Savior.
