experience how small you are - 14th week saturday
Today we read from the book of the prophet Isaiah. It is the passage that narrates his call, his
vocation, and his choice to accept the mission God has entrusted to him.
Before he was sent, Isaiah was made to experience the
greatness, the immensity, eminence, the magnitude of God. God is seated on the
throne and surrounded by angels who cried, Holy, Holy Holy, the trisagion, the
thrice holy God which we repeat every mass during the sanctus. This is the highest form of the superlative
in Hebrew to depict that God has no equal in holiness. Why is this?
In Sydney Australia there is a mountain range so beautiful,
so vast, so majestic. It is a popular
resort with forest reserves and a vast network of caves. Printed on a bus which advertises the resort,
the caption says, "experience how small you are."
Amidst the vast mountain range, amidst the forest so huge one could not
see its boundaries though perched on a peak, amidst the intricate network of
caves so big one can put churches inside it, the advertisement says come and
see how small you are.
This is also the experience of Isaiah before God. He realized how small he was, how tiny he was,
how unworthy he was in the midst of the all-powerful, thrice holy God. We should be made to experience that especially
when we think ourselves too important, too proud, too arrogant.
Before the beach today, under the sky we are made to realize
our littleness. Before the Eucharist we
are made to realize our unworthiness. Be
always humble in the presence of your community. Yes each one is important but be always aware
of your littleness. Always make yourself
available for the community whether in the responsibilities your carry or in
the duties entrusted to you, and even in the little task we voluntarily
do. Be aware always of your
littleness.
