there are debts we cannot repay: 19th week thursday 2012 II
The
Greek word used to describe the debt of the servant to his master is huge, and
the Greek word used is really huge, some say it is a hundred thousand days’
wages. In other words it is so huge one
cannot pay it. And yet what did the
servant say - "just give me time and I will pay you in full." How can he pay the master in full? It was huge, so huge he cannot repay it in
his lifetime even if he tried. That is
why the master did not bite the offer, and instead told his servant that he has
written off the debt. It was too big,
the master had it all erased.
In
contrast the debt owed by another servant to this servant was a thousand times
smaller. The amount was minimal it can
be repaid in 4 months. But again, and
this is a big again, the mindset of the servant was repay, repay. Bayari - you have to settle it. Kay man utang, gani bayaran gid. And thus he had the man put up in prison and tortured until he paid up..
There
are things in life that we cannot pay.
May mga butang, may mga ginpahulam sa imo, may mga ginhatag sa imo nga indi
mo mabayran - tandaan naton ina! There
are things in life that we are not deserving and we do not deserve, and yet
by whatever grace or miracle, we have it now.
There are privileges that we are not worthy of, that we have not
earned, that we do not deserve and yet were given to us without
cost and effort on our part. There are
honors and status nga kon sa gwa lang kita indi gid naton makuha, kag indi gid
mahatag sa aton. Be aware of that. That is why we can only fall on our knees and
marvel at the grace heaped on us - grace upon grace as St. Paul said about his
life.
Let
us be thankful. But above all let us be
humble, always be humble. There are things we cannot pay because int he first place we have been unworthy and so undeserving.
